UCLA Marriage Lab

Information for Our Study Participants

First, a note of thanks...

Since 1991 we have been conducting studies at UCLA to understand what makes marriages work and, in turn, to determine the optimal strategies for making marriages and families strong. By virtue of these studies we are sometimes referred to as "experts" in the field of marriage, but we know that it is you, the couples who graciously participate in our studies, who are the true experts. Our goal is to distill knowledge, wisdom, and experiences from a wide range of couples, so that we can understand how different kinds of marriages develop in different ways. Without your generous support and cooperation we would have no chance of solving this puzzle, and we would have no chance of helping future generations of couples to achieve more fulfilling relationships. We recognize that this research is a partnership, and we are sincerely thankful that you have taken the time and made the effort to share your lives with us.

Which Study Were You In?

If you have found your way to this page, this probably means that you participated in one of the following two studies. Regardless of which study you participated in, please click on either heading for additional information about our activities and findings. After you click on a heading, you will see a series of questions that will guide you through the projects.

UCLA Marriage & Adult

Development Study

UCLA Marriage

Enrichment Study

You participated in this study if
  • you came to UCLA for laboratory visits twice,  once right after your marriage (in 1993 or 1994) and again a year later

  • you returned questionnaires by mail twice a year

  • you completed additional questionnaires if you had a baby

We are very excited to report that since September 2000 we have received funding to continue this study for five more years! This will make our study one of the most thorough analyses of marriage and family development ever conducted. Participation will again involve two lab visits and completion of questionnaires via mail. Couples with children will be asked to bring their oldest child with them when they participate.

If you participated in this study between 1993 and 1998, chances are good that we have already contacted you about the new study. We look forward to working with you on this important new project!

You participated in this study if
  • you came to UCLA for a couples workshop in 1999 or 2000

OR

  • you completed questionnaires at home without coming in for a workshop, after which, we asked you to complete questionnaires by mail.
